We all love a cheeky Chinese, right? But have you ever thought about creating it at home?
Don’t get us wrong, we know that on a Sunday, there is nothing better to cure that hangover than a Chinese Takeaway, but what if the craving hits you mid-week? Wouldn’t it be great to know how to whip something up at home, for a fraction of the cost?
Here’s the top 5 Chinese items from our website that we believe should always be in your cupboard, and our favourite way to use them:
- Lee Kum Kee Peking Duck Sauce: - https://www.essenceofthailand.com/LEEKUMKEEPEKINGDUCKSAUCE383g.html
Who doesn’t love Peking Duck? And this is basically that in a jar. So all you have to do is cook the duck, which you can do very easily at home. You can buy the pancakes from a supermarket or local Asian shop and then all you have to do is thinly chop come cucumber and spring onion and voila… home-made Peking duck pancakes.
- Lee Kum Kee Char Sui Sauce: https://www.essenceofthailand.com/LEEKUMKEECHARSIUSAUCE397g.html
This is a good one – Char Sui sauce is most popularly eaten with pork, you may have heard of a dish called Char Sui Pork.We like to always keep a jar of it in the cupboard to add a little twang to a dish. This would be perfect for a barbecue if you are looking to spice things up, as it also tastes good on wings and chicken drumsticks.
Our favourite way to enjoy this sauce however is in a dish called “Char Sui Pork Buns”. We discovered this recipe after chatting with a food instagrammer called @junie_fooddiary. We asked Junie if she fancied a challenge to make her favourite Chinese dish at home, and she did not disappoint. Take a look at these:
You’ll find her recipe on the “recipes” tab of our website: https://www.essenceofthailand.com/recipes.html , honestly, they are easier to make than you think!
- Lee Kum Kee Spare Rib Sauce: https://www.essenceofthailand.com/LEEKUMKEESPARERIBSAUCE397g.html
Now who doesn’t like ribs? Again, there is something truly special about Chinese Spare Ribs. Not only is it the way they are cooked, but it’s also down to the sticky and tasty sauce they are in – which now you can get in a jar!
Delicious on steaks too, it’s a great staple to have in your cupboard, and again even crack out with the barbecue!

You’ll find Oyster sauce in most dishes, without realising, but if you are looking for something quick, easy and tasty for a mid-week dinner, then this sauce has you covered.
